- Identify resources and therapeutic helps for working with children and families who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Description of Program: Tyler Hoyt, LMFT, local therapist and member of the LDS community, will introduce the unique cultural experiences of members of the LDS faith and pose some potential reframes to therapy and life looking through the lens of the faith’s values and teachings. Participants will be presented with a brief historical background, an outline of the organization of the church, and an overview of some of the fundamental teachings in contrast to other Christian religions. Additionally, participants will discuss ethical dilemmas for working with persons from this community specifically dealing with same-gender attraction, addictions, and marriage. Finally, Tyler will highlight one theoretical model of treatment which is especially helpful to working with LDS clients.
Presenter: Tyler Hoyt, LMFT, has been in private practice since 2013 and there primarily provides faith-based counseling to persons and families in his faith community—The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or “Mormon” community). Tyler Hoyt has worked for over 7 years in community mental health offering individual, family, and play therapies and for over 5 years at a boys ranch in southwestern Arizona offering equine-assisted therapy, and individual/ group therapies with teenage boys and their families. Tyler Hoyt was trained in Functional Family Therapy (FFT) by James Alexander, and worked as an in-home interventionist with adolescents and their families. He received his Master of Science degree at Oklahoma State University’s COAMFTE accredited MFT program. There, Tyler Hoyt was mentored under Dr. David Fournier, who co-created the PREPARE inventory with Dr. Olsen.
